Imu Educational Experience

Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi offers an imu educational experience for schools, organizations, and community groups. Participants learn the traditional process of preparing and cooking in an imu while working alongside staff.

Groups may:

• Purchase kalua pig at program pricing; or
• Participate in the imu process through a hands-on educational experience.

Option 1 Buy Ready-Made:
$8 per pound. No work required.

Option 2 Volunteer & Save:
Help with the imu process to reduce costs.

Option 1: Outright Purchase
• Cost: $8 per pound (frozen kalua pig from Kāko’o ‘Ōiwi).
• Minimums: no minimums
• Volunteering: No volunteer work required.

Option 2: Volunteer Assistance
• Cost: Estimated at $6 per pound (this estimate includes cost of pork, containers, and charging $1.50 per raw weight, other materials). Cost may vary depending on price of pork and type of containers used to store the kalua pig.
• Minimums: 300 pounds minimum finished weight produced
• Maximum: 1,200 pounds maximum finished weight produced
• Volunteering: Provide help with imu setup, shredding, and packaging over two days. First day runs: 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, Second day runs: 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.
• Responsibility: The group/team is responsible for purchasing their own pork and containers. You will also be responsible to pay $1.50/pound based on raw weight. Pricing reflects labor, materials, and facility use.
